What a funeral home and cemetery won't tell you!

Posted by 1FrugalMom on January 1, 2015 at 5:05 PM Comments comments (0)

** IMPORTANT INFORMATION (please feel free to share)! **

Tragically, I've noticed that many of people have recently posted on Facebook about suffering the loss of a loved one (and my heart & prayers goes out to those families).  And just today, I learned some very helpful money saving information about funeral services that I didn't know before, and I want to share the information with you...

When you face a death in your family - and you will - before you EVER speak to a funeral home, or cemetery, speak first to a funeral negotiator.  The loss of a family member is tragic in and of itself so why compound your sorrow with the burden of debt?

For example:

Did you know you do not have to purchase a coffin from a funeral home?  You can acquire one online.  Walmart.com, of all places, is one of many sources to purchase a coffin.  Why pay $7,000 for something you can get the same thing for at $1,500, or less?

Did you know you do not have to hold funeral services in a funeral home?  You can hold your loved ones services in a church at little or no cost.

Did you know you do not have to pay to have your loved ones grave dug?  You and/or friends/family can dig his/her grave yourselves.  What an incredible act of love that is.

I have a friend that has personally helped a family dig a loved one's grave, and used the services of a funeral negotiator.  His mother's funeral services were held in a church at no cost to his family.

To all of you whom have lost a loved one, my heart goes out to you and your families, and I sincerely hope this valuable information will ease some of the financial burden that often accompanies your loved one's final resting arrangements.

Tips for getting the most gas for your monies at the pump!

Posted by 1FrugalMom on April 15, 2013 at 3:50 PM Comments comments (0)

Only buy or fill up your vehicle in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening... your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.  A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Possible Health Benefits of Cinnamon & Honey!

Posted by 1FrugalMom on October 9, 2012 at 8:00 PM Comments comments (0)

The following was posted on a friend's Facebook wall. I do not know the original source.  And I don't know if these work or not, but I've previously heard of some of them, and I thought it was worth passing along (pin it)... below is a copy/paste...

Cinnamon and Honey; Bet the drug companies won't like this one getting around.

Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a 'Ram Ban' (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without side effects for any kind of diseases.

Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients. Researched by western scientists:

HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply it on bread instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also, those who have already had an attack, when they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as one ages the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and the veins.

ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily (morning and night) one cup of hot water with two tablespoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. When taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week (out of the 200 people so treated) practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain -- and within a month, most all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis now started walking without pain.

BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder.

CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water given to a cholesterol patient was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, when taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and, clear the sinuses.

UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from its root.

GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan, it is revealed that when Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles (where DNA is contained) to fight bacterial and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food is eaten relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals

INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural 'Ingredient' which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.

LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Use four teaspoons of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of boiling water to make a tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans increase and even a 100 year old will start performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

RASPY OR SORE THROAT: When throat has a tickle or is raspy, take one tablespoon of honey and sip until gone. Repeat every three hours until throat is without symptoms.

PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it off the next morning with warm water. When done daily for two weeks, it removes all pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS: Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin Infections.

WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast and on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. When taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder three times a day for one month.

FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, even when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, when taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M., the vitality of the body increases within a week.

BAD BREATH: People of South America, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water first thing in the morning so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!

Could Cut Onions be a Home Remedy?? And/or a Cause for Contamination??

Posted by 1FrugalMom on September 21, 2012 at 11:20 PM Comments comments (1)

The following was posted on a friend's Facebook wall. It's VERY interesting, and has caused much debate on my FB wall.  I don't know if it works or not, but I thought it was worth passing along (pin it)...  below is a copy/paste...

ONIONS! Wow! I've never heard of this!!!

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu... Many of the farmers and their families had contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser. She said that several years ago, many of her employees were coming down with the flu, and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:

Thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmer's story...but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia, and, needless to say, I was very ill... I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an empty jar, and place the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs...sure enough it happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

This is the other note. Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don't know what to blame. Maybe it's the onions that are to blame. Onions absorb bacteria is the reason they are so good at preventing us from getting colds and flu and is the very reason we shouldn't eat an onion that has been sitting for a time after it has been cut open.

I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of mayonnaise. Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned from a chemist.

Ed, who was our tour guide, is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially-made mayo is completely safe.

"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the summer picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table, and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.

Ed says that, when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the ONIONS, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES.

He explained onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.

It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!). Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.

Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to use it to cook the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning.

Please pass this on to all you love and care about.

Keep Milk Fresh Longer With Baking Soda!

Posted by 1FrugalMom on September 14, 2012 at 12:10 AM Comments comments (7)
Add half a tablespoon of baking soda to a new, freshly opened, gallon of milk to make it last twice as long!  The baking soda reduces the acidity, and slows down spoilage.  I normally pour a cup of milk out to drink (this gives room to shake the gallon up after adding the baking soda), then add one tablespoon of baking soda to the gallon, and give it a good shaking.  And no, I cannot taste any diffence.  :-)

Also, the refrigerator door is generally NOT the coldest place (b/c it's exposed to warm room temperature air each time the door is opened), so milk should be stored in the body of your fridge (as far back as possible).  And did you know... milk can be frozen!  Just use a little out of the container to give room for expansion.

The next time you find a great deal on milk, stock up using these tips!

Wow! Shame on Walmart!

"Walmart accused of shortchanging customers on gift receipt returns," story HERE!   I knew they did this for items returned, or exchanged, WITHOUT a receipt; but to also do it with a gift receipt as well is so very wrong in my opinion.  It is also my opinion that things just haven't been the same at Walmart since very sadly, their Founder, Sam Walton, passed away in 1992.

Wow! Good to know, though! As in the future, if I ever gift a Walmart item, I'll now be sure provide the original receipt, or better yet, just provide a gift card instead!  Click HERE to read the full article.  Then tell me... What do you think?!

A little Southern ingenuity early this morning...

Posted by 1FrugalMom on January 4, 2012 at 7:40 AM Comments comments (0)

A little Southern ingenuity early this morning... Today this item was not a BBQ cleaner, but rather doubled as a windshield scrapper! Was your windshield also covered in thick ice this morning? That's almost unheard of here in Florida! They don't even sell ice scrappers down here, lol, hence why I'm very excited about this freebie I received in the mail that got put to good use on this cold morning! What items also do double duty in your home, too? I'd love to hear your ideas! Have a great day!! p.s. For those of you whom don't already know... NEVER pour warm/hot water on cold glass (to melt ice, etc), it will casue it to crack & break!!!

Brand loyal, or not?

Posted by 1FrugalMom on June 9, 2011 at 6:00 PM Comments comments (0)

Are you brand loyal, or not?! And if so, what brand(s) are you loyal to, and why? Personally, I'm not typically brand loyal, I'll go w/ the best deal. However, I do make three exceptions: Tide laundry detergent, Dawn Dishwashing Liquid, and Charmin toilet paper. I've tried others but I always come back to those three. And now I stick w/ them b/c they simply work better, and in the long run they save me both time & money. A lot like rechargeable batteries (and i use those too lol), they cost more up front, but they save so much more in the long run.  Please Note: * These honest opinions are solely my own.  I have NOT been compensated.  This is NOT a paid, nor sponsored, review.
